In 2017, the first-ever emergency
medicine residency program was started in Maputo, Mozambique. This
four-year program will graduate physician specialists trained in managing
emergency medical care. The graduates will have the knowledge and skills to run
an emergency department, direct pre-hospital care, and educate and train other
physicians, nurses, and technicians in state of the art, evidence-based
emergency care that is appropriate to these low-resource settings.
This investment in the
training of these young, dedicated, pioneering physicians will have ripple
effects that will impact the health and well-being
of hundreds of thousands – or more – Mozambicans
in the to decades come.
